It seems that the inaugural Afghan President Hamid Karzai was plagued by fraudulent votes recently, whereby findings have revealed that almost a third of the votes which were for the Afghan President weren’t valid. Of course, President Hamid Karzai has announced recently to annul a third of his votes which were received from the election which was said to be invalid. It also seems that the Kabul government was somewhat pressured by the US government to annul the votes from the runoff election. The recent election showed that Hamid Karzai received well over 50 percent of the votes which was cast during the election. By annulling a third of these votes, the Afghan president still remain in power, as he still commands majority of the votes.
On the other hand, Obama has continue to pledge to his support to the Afghanistan government, whereby the Kabul government will continue to receive support from the US and NATO in combating insurgents from the Talibans. Also, Obama has mentioned that he is optimistic on the Afghanistan democracy which is slowly taking shape in the country, as clearly the move by President Hamid Karzai to annul fraudulent votes proved to be a stepping stone in forming a legit and credible government.
Do you think that Afghanistan can maintain their democracy long after US troops have withdrawn from the war-torn country?
