Storing information on discs have become a mainstream storage method, whereby such storage option can offer cheap storage solution, while the storage medium is so durable that it can survive punishing environment for at least 100 years. Nevertheless, Sony did a great job in their Blu-ray player, but it seems that the company is now eyeing the next Holy Grail for these optical storage solutions.
Apparently, Sony is working with a group of researchers from Tohoku University, whereby sources have indicated that they are in the midst of testing a new blue-violet pulse semiconductor lasers. On the other hand, this particular laser is capable of producing 100 watt output. And if the laser materializes, it will be able to push optical-based storage discs to store a whopping 1TB of data.
