The American political party system is dominated by two parties. They are the Republicans and the democrats. These two parties date back to very old time and have continued to be the two major political parties of the US politics. The symbol for the Republican Party is elephant and for the Democratic Party is a donkey. These two parties are often compared to the parties in Britain and Germany, wherein one party is economically interventionist and socially radical as compared to the other party. The blue states in US are won by the Democratic Party and the red states by the Republican Party.
The powers of the federal government are defined in the constitution. Here each state has a legislature, executive and the judiciary. Under the legislature come the House of Representatives and the senate. The judiciary comprises of the courts. The court is present in each state. The US politics is a divided democracy in terms of separation of powers between the legislatures, executive and the judiciary. Secondly, the democracy is divided on the basis of division of power between the federal government and the state government to make the functioning in a proper way. The political party system is divided politically also on the basis of the social issues.
