HokieSpeed is the world’s 96th most powerful supercomputer – although 96th isn’t much to talk aloud, still, this particular supercomputer can pack a punch, in which it can perform 455 teraflops literally. Designed for the Hokies at Virginia Tech, the respective supercomputer runs on an architecture that is formed by 209 separate computers, and each of these computers are powered by dual six-core Xeon E5645 CPUs and two NVIDIA M2050 / C2050 448-core GPUs.
On the other hand, the HokieSpeed is already at the final stage of testing. Other interesting facts about HokieSpeed is the entire supercomputer setup only costs $1.4 million, and it is regarded as the world’s 11th most energy-efficient computer too. Apparently, HokieSpeed will be used to drive a 14-foot wide by four-foot tall visualization wall, which is constructed from eight 46-inch Samsung 3D televisions humming in unison.
